Scotland has a selection of well-known rivers and gorges with tall tales and local myths and legends and some lesser know gems all waiting to be explored, used as a coaching venue or ‘sent’ as one off the tick list (within reason). This is where the advanced Scotland offering comes in..

Aimed at the consistent grade three paddler that’s done the odd grade four and wants to build skills, confidence and be taken into the advanced environments. This week covers a variety of elements needed to safely and confidently paddle in the grade four environments.

The environments and skills covered will depend on the weather and the skill level and individual requirements of the team.

Environment wise this could be anything from committing gorges like the Roy gorge, Findhorn gorge and the lower Moriston, steep creek environment of things like the Etive and its tributaries or the volume runs of the Orchy (if the rain comes). Often the question is ‘what if it doesn’t rain?’ There’s the dam released rivers like the upper Moriston, Gary and Spean that will give good coaching options.

The above environments give good scope to cover a variety of skills appropriate to your skill level and wants and needs. This could be things like identifying line choice in the advanced environments, timed accelerations, boofing, flaring, different uses of a weighted/unweighted bow and confidence boosting in the environment.

Pre Requisites

Confident on grade three and have paddled a couple of grade four rapids, reliable white water roll.
